Highland Family YMCA Annual Run

The Highland Family YMCA Run is a great event for the whole family. The run features a half marathon, 10K, 5K, Mayor’s Fun Walk, Kiddie Run and Youth 1-mile Run. More than 500 runners participate in the run that has been in Highland since 1983. The run takes place in a more rural part of Highland with mountains, orange groves and tall palm trees lining the streets.

The Highland Family YMCA Run is the major fund raiser for the non-profit group that provides recreational opportunities to Highland youth. Some of the programs include karate, childcare, gymnastics, football, Kiddy T-ball, soccer and basketball. The run is held each year on the Sunday before the Super Bowl Game. For more information, call the Highland Family YMCA at 909-864-8296.

Citrus Harvest Festival Info

The Citrus Harvest Festival is a one day street festival held annually by the Highland Historic and Cultural Preservation Board. The Festival occurs each year in March or April to signify the traditional orange harvest season that was once the staple of local economy in the early 1900s. The Festival is located in the heart of Old Downtown near Palm Avenue and Pacific Street.

The Citrus Harvest Festival is a family event that offers something for everyone. The Historic Home Tour provides a guided tour of the exterior and interior of several historic sites. Antique and classic cars line the streets as they vie for the title of ‘Best of Show.’ There are a variety of booths, including exhibitors of the 1890s to 1930s, crafts, art, apparel, etc. You won’t need to walk far to reach one of the two food courts located at each end of the festival.

Children can enjoy various game booths, pony rides, bounce house and historically-related activities located at “Kid’s Corner.” All ages are encouraged to participate in the many contests such as pie eating, baking, costume, coloring and the most popular Ugly Dog Contest. Live entertainment is provided throughout the day by professional bands and local amateur talent.

The Festival promotes awareness of local history and raises funds for District improvements. If you have any questions regarding the Festival, please contact the City of Highland at 909-864-8732 or write to City Hall of Highland, 27215 Base Line, Highland, CA 92346.

Highland’s Trail Systems

Trails provide the City a system of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails throughout Highland. Beginning in the late 1970s, area residents began to recognize the changing character of Highland. Where rural country lanes and orange groves had existed, new housing tracts and commercial projects were proposed. Early after the City’s incorporation in 1987, the new City Council established the Equestrian/Trails Committee to provide a forum for discussing and formulating answers to trails issues. Made up of area residents, representatives from several local resource agencies and large property owners, the Equestrian/Trails Committee laid the conceptual groundwork for a system of public trails in the East Highlands area. Today, the Community Trails Committee (formed to continue the work of the Equestrian/Trails Committee) promotes the maintenance and establishment of trails, conducts fund raisers, hosts the annual Highland Trails Day Event, and most importantly provides recommendations to the City Council on trails related issues. In the long run, Highland’s trail system is expected to provide local hikers, bicyclists, and equestrians with a trail from the mountains to the Pacific Ocean. Please contact City Hall at 909-864-8732 for additional Trails information.
